Spider Cranes: Versatility and Precision in the Most Challenging Spaces
When working space is limited, a compact crane is not enough. The machine must be able to adapt to its surroundings, find the right operating position and maintain stability and precision throughout the lifting operation. This is where spider cranes show their full potential.
The name comes from the distinctive configuration of their outriggers, which resemble the legs of a spider when deployed. Behind this characteristic design lies a precise engineering approach: distributing the stabilisation points around the machine to enable operation in different configurations and within restricted spaces.
For BGLift, this approach is the starting point for developing machines capable of tackling complex jobs in demanding environments, combining compact dimensions, lifting capacity and control.
What is a spider crane?
A spider crane is a lifting machine equipped with an articulated and independently adjustable stabilisation system, designed to adapt to the conditions of the working area.
Unlike conventional configurations, the outriggers can be positioned in different ways, allowing the crane to find the most suitable setup even when the available space does not allow for a standard configuration.
This is particularly important on sites with restricted access, in indoor environments, during maintenance work and whenever walls, structures or other obstacles limit the available working area.
A spider crane therefore does not simply need to reach the work location: it must also be able to stabilise itself as effectively as possible once it gets there.
Stability and adaptability: the value of the spider configuration
Stabilisation is one of the most critical aspects of any lifting operation. With spider cranes, it becomes even more important because these machines are often used precisely where the available space and working conditions can vary considerably.
The ability to adjust the position of the outriggers allows the crane’s configuration to be adapted to the characteristics of the work area, seeking the best possible balance between footprint and stabilisation area.
BGLift has developed this principle through electronic control systems that take the position of the outriggers into account during operation. On the M250, the integrated system automatically adjusts the load limiter according to the configuration determined by the position of the outriggers, helping the operator work safely.
Technology, in this case, does not simply add another function to the machine: it makes it easier to manage an operating condition that can change from one job site to another.

One of the main advantages of spider cranes is their ability to operate in locations where accessing and positioning a conventional machine can be difficult.
The BGLift M250, for example, has a width of just 780 mm in its closed configuration, a weight of 2,420 kg and a maximum lifting capacity of 2,500 kg. Its compact dimensions are designed to allow access to particularly challenging environments without turning compactness into a compromise on performance.
Once at the work area, the machine can expand its operating configuration through its outriggers and make use of continuous rotation without the space requirements associated with conventional counterweights. An optional hydraulic jib can also increase the working radius and height, making it easier to overcome certain obstacles.
It is precisely this transformation—from a compact machine for transport and access into a fully configured lifting machine on site—that makes the spider configuration particularly effective.
BGLift M250: technology designed for real-world applications
The M250 was developed to make lifting operations possible where accessibility, precision and control are essential.
Its remote control allows the operator to manage the crane, tracks and outriggers from a distance, while the electronic control system interacts with the machine’s configuration. Automatic stabilisation and multiple outrigger positions also allow the machine’s setup to be adapted to different operating conditions.
Other features include continuous rotation, an extendable undercarriage and the option to configure the machine with a hydraulic jib, winch and other accessories.
The result is a machine designed not simply to be small, but to make complex work easier to perform.
BGLift spider cranes: technology designed around the operator
Designing a spider crane requires a particularly careful balance. On one hand, the machine must have a reduced footprint to reach difficult locations. On the other, it must provide stability, lifting capacity and precision once the operation begins.
For BGLift, achieving this balance involves both technology and listening to the professionals who use these machines every day.
Control systems, remote operation and stabilisation therefore become tools for making the machine easier to manage and allowing the operator to focus on the lifting operation itself.
This approach leads to spider cranes designed not simply to enter the most difficult spaces, but to work effectively in those spaces.
